““Lesbian feminism largely emerged in response to the women’s liberation movement’s exclusion of lesbians. As the Second Wave of feminism picked up steam during the 1960s, feminist discourse largely ignored lesbianism. Some feminists harbored hostile attitudes towards lesbians, however. Some viewed lesbianism as a sexual rather than a political issue. Others believed the project of feminism would dismantle strict sexual categories, and would release a “natural polymorphous sexuality,” making lesbian politics irrelevant. NOW’s leader at the time, Betty Friedan, referred to lesbianism as the “Lavender Menace.” This phrase referred to her view that incorporating lesbianism in the feminist agenda would undermine the credibility of the women’s movement overall.””

It is still happening. This new wave of feminism is Lesbophobic and anti-butch, and lest we forget it’s also white/Western-centric, bourgeois, heterocentric, neoliberal, pro-porn, hyper-sexualized, hyper-feminized, obsessed with seeking male opinions and catering to his frail ego, in another words abysmal.

It feels really fucked up to read a post about lesbian exclusion from feminism that conveniently forgets that trans women of color exist, that one thing which united straight and lesbian feminists was their unabashed attacks and abandonment of trans women from queer communities, and that lesbian feminism (past and present) has a big responsibility for the violence, poverty, and stigma that TWoC and other trans women still face. And if wave of feminists don’t still outright attack us like they did in the 2nd wave, they definitely aren’t talking about the needs we still have just to survive.

Like really, you’re gonna bring up feminism’s shit with being “hyper-feminized” and “catering to his frail ego” but you’re gonna forget about women who face the most violence from straight and lesbian feminism’s sins?

Third, when I wrote several weeks ago about the remarkable shift in public opinion on gay equality, I noted that this development is less significant than it seems because the cause of gay equality poses no real threat to elite factions or to how political and economic power in the US [or United Kingdom] are distributed. If anything, it bolsters those power structures because it completely and harmlessly assimilates a previously excluded group into existing institutions and thus incentivizes them to accommodate those institutions and adopt their mindset. This event illustrates exactly what I meant. [It also explains how our beloved Prime Minister David Cameron can lead the public charge for gay rights which was previously anathema to those in charge]

The woman who invented the modern basis of wireless communication made also film history when appearing in the controversial film Ekstase (also known as, Symphonie der Liebe), Ecstasy. Hedy Lamarr, by that time, Hedy Kiesler plays a ordinary woman who marries a older man who can’t please her so she leaves him and finds a lover who can. This film from 1933 contains the first ever non-pornographic sex scene with a stimulated orgasm. Hedy had trouble to show emotion during the scene so the director, Gustav Machatý unexpectedly jabbed her in the derriere with a pin in order to get the desired expressions on her face. Hedy was 19 when the film released and a lot of sources say she was 19 years old during film but in her elder days she confessed that she was younger than that. The film shows female sexuality in a positive way and was ahead of its’s time. The lead female character is not shamed for her sexual desires as she leaves her husband for a younger lover. She has her own voice and own determination as she goes off leaving her husband and later lover to live happily in her own ways. Pope Pius XII publicly denounced the film and it was banned in Germany main reason was the sex scene was between a German man and a Jewish woman (Hedy Lamarr being Jewish in real life), the film still goes on to be one of the worlds most groundbreaking pictures and even shows a nude Hedy Lamar, from the waist up.
